Our work

Conservation& EcosystemRestoration

Protecting the ecosystems wildlife depends on.

20,000+ mangroves planted · women-led

Protecting the ecosystems wildlife depends on. Combining institutional policy co-financing with community-led coastal mangrove canopy bio-shield restoration across East African marine corridors.

The challenge

Enforcement protects wildlife from being taken. It does not, on its own, protect the places wildlife needs. Coastal degradation, habitat loss and declining ecosystem resilience remove the ground the species stand on.

Along the Tanzanian coast, mangrove loss is the clearest example: it removes a nursery for marine life, a carbon store, and the natural defence that protects communities from erosion and storm surge.

Restoration is measured in decades. The Kigamboni mangrove project is ongoing.

Our approach

ATI addresses environmental protection through restoration as well as enforcement, working with coastal communities, government partners and funders on long-term stewardship rather than one-off events.

At the policy layer, ATI has co-financed formal instruments with Zanzibar's Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, Natural Resources and Livestock: the Situational Analysis Report 2025 and the Zanzibar Unified Strategy for Natural Resources Security and Resilience 2026–2036.

ATI strengthens:

  • Coastal ecosystem restoration with community stewards
  • Long-term monitoring and maintenance of restored sites
  • Government policy and strategy development, through co-financing
  • Community environmental education and school-based planting

ATI provides technical training, capacity building and coordination support. Operational authority (investigation, arrest, seizure and prosecution) rests with statutory law enforcement and judicial authorities.
