In the heart of Kigamboni, at Pembamnazi, ATI is working hand in hand with the Government of Tanzania and local communities to restore and protect vital mangrove ecosystems. Mangroves are the lifeline of coastal communities — protecting shorelines from erosion, supporting fisheries, and absorbing large amounts of carbon, making them a key defence against climate change. Yet, unsustainable harvesting, pollution, and unplanned coastal development threaten their survival and the livelihoods of those who depend on them.
The mangroves of Pembamnazi are not only an ecological treasure — they are the foundation of community resilience. Healthy mangrove ecosystems sustain local fisheries, provide building and fuel resources, and help communities adapt to the impacts of climate change.
By restoring these vital ecosystems and creating sustainable economic opportunities, ATI is reducing the vulnerabilities that often lead to gender-based violence (GBV), human trafficking, and unsafe migration. When communities, especially women and youth, gain stable and dignified livelihoods, they are less exposed to exploitation and abuse.
ATI’s initial goal is to restore over 60 hectares of degraded mangrove forest in Pembamnazi, Kigamboni. This effort will revive essential habitats, strengthen coastal protection, and enhance carbon storage — while empowering communities with new, sustainable sources of income.
